Explain your impact
Explanation
The calculations on this page show how much impact your clothing has on the environment. We look at three things:
- CO2 emissions: This is the amount of carbon dioxide released when producing 1 T-Shirt, and we compare it to how many kilometers you could drive a car.
- Water consumption: This is how much water is used to make a T-Shirt. We compare it to liters of water.
- Energy consumption: This is how much electricity you use to wash your clothes, and we measure it in kilowatt hours (kWh).
The data we use comes from various sources:
- For water consumption: According to Reshare.nl , an average of 2500 liters of water is used for the production of one T-shirt.
- For CO2 emissions: Information from Milieu Centraal tells us how much CO2 is emitted when making clothing.
- For energy consumption: The consumption of a washing machine according to UnitedConsumers.com .
Allocation:
1st owner: 67% of the environmental impact
- 2nd owner: 33% of the environmental impact
Calculation method:
Research by CE Delft for Marktplaats shows that second-hand items last on average 1.5 times longer. The user who offers second-hand clothing is allocated 1 / 1.5 = 0.67 (67%) of the environmental impact (and therefore has an environmental benefit of 33% with this promotion).
An environmental impact of 33% can then be attributed to the second owner. This user is therefore approximately three times better off than if the garment were purchased new.
